Bears in Canadian Air

Canadians may be surprised to find that they are being subject to observation by a Russian Tupolev TU-154M aircraft this week in accordance with the Open Skies Treaty.

Using onboard imagery systems, the Russian aircraft can examine objects of interest -- such as military installations, industrial complexes, population centres and transportation facilities.

Canadian military escorts and technical specialists will also be onboard to monitor the images collected and to ensure the plane doesn't deviate from the agreed-upon flight plan, said a military statement.
