A: To give the Germans some shade as they marched in.
The French have been united longer thus could claim a better lineage. But the Germans have influenced the world over with their staff system, mobile warfare theories and practice. Not to mention all the cool uniform stuff (skulls, dress black uniforms), gravelly tough sounding militant words.
Sure they needed some assistance, but the last time the French ultimately lost a war to Germany was in 1870. Germany's won-lost record since then is 0-2.
