What are your favorite wargame counters? Why? What info has to be on the counter and what info are you willing to chase around in other charts? What kind of art do you prefer?

Favorite non-functional counters are the ship counters that come with CoA's Command at Sea series of games. Good top-down view, nice art, but no real information.
Favorite functional wargame counters are probably the ones in the TSR version of Terrible Swift Sword. Good art, lots of info packed into a small package. They just "felt" right.
Honorable mention to ASL vehicle and ordinance counters which are a marvel of high information density with very high ease of use.
Pet peeve is icons used in non-tactical games. Hate, hate, hate, Doc Decision's counters for that reason.
Simonsen Simonsen Simonsen. Can't say that name often enough.
Read SPI's book on Wargame Design, pp 59-66, on counters. See the examples on page 64. They're all good. Simonsen did them.
ALL HAIL REDMOND A. SIMONSEN!
Agree with BillP on icons (i.e. little men) used in non-tactical games. Stupid Stupid Stupid. Simonsen would never do that (well, mostly he didn't).
