Impact Assessments on Guam Relocation Complete: Capsizing Ruled Out

Despite the concerns of the inimitable Hank Johnson, the final environmental impact assessment of the relocation of Marines to Guam does not appear be worried about the island capsizing.

The Department of the Navy (DoN) announced yesterday the availability of the final environmental impact statement (EIS) for the Guam and Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Military Relocation.

The final EIS includes analyses of impacts for the relocation of approximately 8,600 Marines and their 9,000 dependents from Okinawa to Guam, the construction of a new deep-draft wharf to support a transient nuclear powered aircraft carrier, and the establishment and operation of an Army Missile Defense Task Force.

The DoN coordinated with representatives from across the federal government to resolve many of the issues raised during the 90-day public comment period. The DoN received over 10,000 comments and the final EIS has been modified as appropriate and/or includes direct responses to those comments.

The final EIS can be downloaded at http://www.guambuildupeis.us.
