A soldier (right) models the latest Multi Terrain Pattern (MTP) camouflage soon so be issued to troops deploying to Afghanistan. On the left of the image, a soldier can be seen wearing the conventional desert camouflage currently in service in Afghanistan. It has been specifically designed for the Green Zone area that runs through Afghanistan where the regular desert terrain camouflage can be less effective. It is the first time since 1968 that the Armed Forces have changed the camouflage pattern. The Multi-Terrain Pattern will eventually become the new look of the British Armed Forces.

Why is everyone changing their camouflage patterns so quickly? The plain old green we wore in the old Canadian Forces was actually pretty good; it picked up dust in the desert and blended in with most vegetation - we never stood out. Sometimes the simplest methods are the best. Now the Canadian Forces has a "digital" pattern like the American, though it is shades of green and brown - setting aside the embarassing interlude of a nylon-like fabric camouflage jacket (in a woodland-like pattern) that was issued for wear in garrison only, so you could stand next to your desk and pretend you were a tree I suppose....
