"Professionalize Info Warfare": UK General

A former Major-General has spoken out on the need to put information warfare at the front of the UK strategy in Afghanistant.

Prince Harry's former commander, retired General Andrew Mackay has voiced what a lot of journalists have long believed ; that Britain risks losing the information war in Afghanistan unless military media operations reach a much more professional footing.

The Major-General, who resigned last year amid reports that he was unhappy with the troops' treatment, has co-authored a paper for the prestigious UK Defence Academy.
It calls for a radical change in attitude over the importance of
information and media officers to conflicts such as Afghanistan.

At present 'well-meaning and enthusiastic amateurs' were seconded from every
branch of the military for two or three-year tours, who 'did their best with
minimal training but who are unlikely to return to such duties again'.

It was 'ridiculous' that media operations officer positions were given to
those with no experience as they were 'one of the most important appointments
to any battle group or staff'.
