This week in wargaming has me turning my attention to New Year’s Day. In celebration of the New Year a friend of mine forwarded a newsletter he receives that addressed historical events that took place on the first of January. While there is plenty of fodder to chose from, the initial event the newsletter addressed was the one that caught my eye. Julius Caesar (Who else? He seems to be everywhere in history) was the first man to put us on the Julian calendar that we use today. In 45 BC the year got kicked off on the 1st of January based on a solar calendar rather than the lunar calendar which was used previously. I have no idea what prompted the change – theological devotion to Mithras or practical reasons…or some other entirely. Whatever the cause, we’ve been more or less stuck with it since and most of the world seems to have adopted it for better or worse. As a result, events surrounding Julius Caesar are probably most appropriate to kick off this Wargaming Wednesday column, and as a result, we’re going with things Roman for gaming.
