According to this article from the BBC, singer and former Royal Army officer James Blunt, backed up by then-Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Lt. Gen. Mike Jackson, might very well have stopped World War III by refusing a direct order from General Wesley Clark to "overpower" Russian forces who had seized Pristina airport at the beginning of the NATO-led peace-making operation in Kosovo. To quote Lt. Gen. Jackson:
I'm not going to have my soldiers be responsible for starting World War 3.
Personally, I've heard bits of pieces of the Pristina airport story, including a memorable quote from one British officer who was ready to "put some 25mm rounds in their Commie asses." I never quite realized how hot the situation on the ground really was.
