The KCT-led Task Force 55 in Afghanistan is composed of Special Forces and Afghan special police. The task force operates in the wilderness of Afghanistan and conducts counter-insurgency operations. Often these operations lead to the capture of Taliban leaders and the seizure of hidden weapons stockpiles. The KCT has been operating in Afghanistan since 2002 and have racked up a spectacular number of successful operations alongside other coalition Special Forces.
The commandos were in the Dutch news recently because several of its operators were awarded Bronze and Iron Crosses for their bravery under enemy fire in Uruzgan. Two such members were a captain and a corporal, whose vehicle patrol was ambushed by the Taliban from three sides. When the enemy opened fire at close range, the captain was temporarily blinded as his riflescope was shattered by an enemy bullet, sending glass splinters into his eye. His vision was restored when his medic, a corporal, braved enemy fire to treat his wounds. The enemy was eventually defeated when the commandos ordered a “danger-close” air strike. This involved a NATO aircraft dropping a 500-pound bomb on the Taliban while the enemy was only 140 meters away.
