What would the first strike have looked like?

I find it odd that the UK is not decorated with mushroom clouds.

Wow. Just wow. This looks interesting at first glance and then it rapidly fails the laugh test, as Shelldrake pointed out. Some other observations:

1) The graphic suggests that NATO is the aggressor. While this was possible and a preemptive spoiling attack might have made military sense during a crisis, Alliance politics would have made it unlikely.

2) All of those mushroom clouds east of the Inter-German Border were going to be created by 3 NATO heavy bombers (presumably B-52's). How about no?

3) Only 5 Warsaw Pact nukes for all of West Germany? I think not.

4) The diagram suggests that we would have left all those juicy targets in East Germany alone once the conflict crossed the nuclear threshold.

5) The author must think we REALLY hated Poland back in the day :).
